I have lots of favourite animals for different reasons (tortoises live for a really long time) but I guess my absolute favourite would have to be my husband and he’s a human (don’t forget that humans are animals too)!

      I like it!

Can I say an imaginary animal? I’ve always really loved dragons!

But seriously, I like lots of animals too… but one of my favourites would have to be the black panther. A little bit cheesy, perhaps, but there it is… I’ve always wanted to have a pet panther!

      Hey guys,

Favourite animal is a really really tough one! My favourite animal would definitely be one from the ocean. There are so many though!

Maybe a shark as they are so powerful yet beautiful. They are also really endangered despite probably being around for 400 million years!

Or maybe a squid. They can change colours in the blink of an eye, are quite cute and are considered to be the most intelligent of all invertebrates. Caribbean Reef Squid can send one message via color patterns to a squid on their right, while they send another message to a squid on their left!

Or lastly maybe a deep-sea yeti crab (Kiwa species). These were only discovered quite recently and there are only three species known so far – one from off the Galapagos, one from the Antarctic and one from off Costa Rica. They are white in colour and live at special underwater volcanoes called hydrothermal vents (which I study). The species from Costa Rica called Kiwa hirsuta has very hairy arms. These crabs wave their arms over the hot fluid coming out of the vents. They do this because there are lots of bacteris living on their hairy arms which use chemicals from the hot vent fluid as a source of energy. The yeti crab then eats the bacteria off his arms. It’s kind of like having groceries on your arms! Here is a funny video showing the yeti crabs waving their arms in the fluid – it looks like they are dancing.
