I think one of the best things is the opportunity to travel. I’ve been lucky enough to do lots of fieldwork over the years and have been to places like Ethiopia, Tunisia, Mexico and Iceland collecting samples to analyse back in the lab. It also means you get to see the things off the tourist track too.

I love the travelling too. So far, I’ve got to visit or work in Sydney, the Great Barrier Reef, Boston, San Francisco, Boulder (Colorado), Vienna, Innsbruck, Amsterdam, Oxford, London… and even Manchester! 😉

But perhaps the best thing about my job is that I get to explore the things I’m curious about – and that makes it fun.

      Hey,

The best thing about my PhD and my science is seeing parts of the seafloor and unique ecosystems and animals that NO ONE else on the PLANET has EVER seen before! Every time we venture into the deep sea, there is a 50% chance that we will find a new species!

Like Angela and Nathan, the travel in my job has also been amazing! For my PhD so far I have been to Jamaica twice, Trinidad once, the Bahamas once and Rhode Island in the USA. Over the next year, I have to spend 6 weeks in the Antarctic (I am so excited!!!), 6 weeks in the Caribbean again and then also go to a meeting in Canada.

I also love being able to tell the public about what I do. Working at the Natural History Museum in London means that I get to give talks to the public and interact with lots of families which is always really fun!
