Hi again Charlie. I work at the Medical Research Council National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR). NIMR is a research institute dedicated to studying important questions about health. The Institute is the largest supported by the Medical Research Council (MRC), a national organisation funded by the British taxpayer that promotes research into all areas of medical and related science to improve the health of the British public.
•more than 300 scientists work at NIMR
•with roughly 100 PhD students
•and we are supported by over 200 research support staff (people who help with computers, animals and other important things)
I work at the Natural History Museum in London. Most people who come to visit this incredible place never actually realise that there is a whole scientific institution there as well as a museum. There are 900 staff in all and about 350 of those are scientists. There are also about 60 PhD students. The rest of the staff are visitor helpers, shop assitants, cooks, cleaners etc etc and people who deal with the public side of the museum. I’m in the Zoology department of the Science which is in the Darwin Centre. In my office there are 5 other people – 4 of whom are PhD students including me. It’s a really great place to work!
Hi
in a similar way to Harriet I also work for a government research council – the Natural Environment Research Council. I’m based at the British Geological Survey near Nottingham where there are about 500 staff, but in my section, the NERC Isotope Geosciences Laboratory there are about 20 of us.
