Enjoy the experience. Be patient for the result. And if has a chance to use or explore other experimental methods, he should try and do it.

If it doesn’t work out the way you expect at first, keep trying. A negative result is just as important as a positive one.

      Hi zmzmzm,

I guess I would say a PhD is a long and difficult thing to achieve, so don’t get disheartened if it doesn’t always progress as fast as you hope it will. A really important thing is to make sure you work on things that you are really enthusiastic about and interested in, because that helps make it through the difficult parts and come out the other side okay.

      Cheers,
      Nathan.

I think patience is really important and sticking with it when you get a bit fed up! If it’s a scientific one then it can help to have more than one thing on the go at once so if something isn’t working then you can concentrate on something else for a while. If it’s more of a reading-focussed PhD then structure and routine are really important! Tell him good luck and think of the Dr!

Enjoy it and don’t stress out too much if experiments don’t work.
Talk to other PhD students who have been through the same experience.
