      Hi hollisterchicken,

I think the most important thing we need to do to reduce global warming is to cut right down on how much we use fossil fuels in our society. We can all do things like use more public transport and walk to the shops instead of drive – and if we all did that, it would already make a huge difference. I also think that offices and shops should mostly turn off their lights at night time, rather than leaving those big empty buildings all lit up.

The most difficult part of this question is what do we replace it with? So far, none of the alternatives have come forward as an obvious and complete solution, but a big part of the reason for that is that people have only really been pushing hard on researching these new technologies for a very short space of time – I would guess 20 or 30 years at the most. Now that may sound like a lot to young people like us, but it can be a very short time in the development of technology, especially technology which has to solve such a hard problem as this.

The important thing to remember, however, is that we don’t need to find just one technology that can replace all our use of fossil fuels. We can use a whole range of clean energy options to replace them. In fact, if you think about it, that’s what happens with the fossil fuels themselves: after all, coal, oil and gas are really all different things.

None of this will happen, however, or at least certainly not quickly, unless we choose to invest much more money researching new, clean energy sources. And that’s where politics becomes very important. We need to convince the politicians that we really do care about this issue and it really is important.

For example, I would personally be happy to spend a lot more on petrol if I knew that the extra cost was being used to research new, clean ways to power our cars. Everyone says it’s too high already, but just think about the cost of petrol. It’s currently around £1.50 per litre. Now think about the cost of a 1 litre bottle of water or coke in the petrol station shop… Most people spend more on water or coke, without complaining about the price, than they would on petrol – which is a rare and non-renewable resource! And in the US, they pay only 1/3 or 1/2 as much for petrol as we do in the UK. How crazy is that?

      Cheers,
      Nathan.

Something you can easily do is to reduce, reuse and recycle.

The most simple is try to use paper to its full capacity. Can you use the back of the paper? Can you use it as a scrap paper? Can you prevent using paper and use electronic copy instead? Remember that paper came from trees. And trees could have help reduce global warming.

Reuse plastic bags. Make sure you bring your own bags when you go to shopping market.

Use public transportation. Or walk instead, that gives you a good exercise too!

Unplug all electrical equipments when not in use… because even if it is switched off but plugged, it still uses energy and contribute to global warming.

      Hi
colleagues of mine at the British Geological Survey are working on something called ‘carbon capture’ it’s the idea that large emissions of CO2 can be captured and stored deep underground and therefore taken out of the atmosphere, see the BGS webpage for more details:
